Subtl.ai: The Startup That Whispered Goodbye

Subtl.ai was once a rising name in India's GenAI space, which had smart tech and real clients like SBI, and ₹1.8 Cr in funding. Despite having early wins, the startup shut down in 2025. Have a look at what it failed and what we can learn from it.

Subtl.ai was an Indian Generative AI startup. It built tools which could search, understand, and answer various questions that needed to be found out after going through files like PDFs, reports, and emails. The concept was very creative and was for the betterment of people. They made the work easier and saved a lot of time. It was just like having your own personalised ChatGPT to whom you can ask anything and it will do it within seconds.

Where It All Began…

Subtl.ai was founded by Vishnu Ramesh and Manish Shrivastava in 2019. The startup was based in Hyderabad, Telangana. They also raised ₹1.8 Cr from big investors like Mohit Gulati, G Vamshi Raju, etc.

They found a solution to the problem that could save so much of hard work and time of a person. Their solution was to provide a personalised AI assistant powered by RAG (Retrieval-Augmented Generation). They turned messy data into searchable content. The idea was just too good to be true, as it would reduce the work of companies. From a small team, they began building what they called “Private Google” for enterprises.

Case Study: How Subtl.ai Helped SBI Save 56,000+ minutes of Employee Time

The Problem

SBI teams regularly needed to extract information from many documents and files. This was time-consuming, inefficient, and inconsistent. So they wanted an alternative which could be used instead of checking each document in detail.

The Solution

Subtl.ai used its RAG engine to make things easier and convenient for them to use. They organized the company information in safe and secure manner so that their privacy is not hindered. It also helped them get direct, quick, and accurate answers to the questions asked by employers.

Shocking Results

It gave correct answers 92% of the time in real tests, which is a reliable number and it also saved 5600 minutes of the employee’s time. It really made things easier for the company as well as employees in the HR, legal, and operations fields. It really proved to be a great help to them.

Ocean of Problems in Which They Drowned

  • They were not able to raise funds.
  • They served clients in different domains and did not focus on one, so as a result, there was no repeat business.
  • Vishnu Ramesh was CEO, but later realised that he could have worked better as CTO.
  • They did small tests with companies, but they did not convert to big paying customers.
  • AI space is overly crowded, and selling to big companies is quite a big task in India.
  • They were not able to make APIs developer-friendly.

As a result of so many problems arising, they decided to close the startup and informed the people about it via a LinkedIn post by Vishnu Ramesh on 3rd July, 2025.

What Every Founder Must Know

Subtl.ai may have shut down, but it has definitely taught us some important lessons which should be remembered.
* It is better to concentrate on one rather than on everything else.
*Even the best product needs proper marketing and clear information must be given to the people. *The core members must be aware of their own and the company’s positives and negatives.

Even though Subtl.ai failed but it proved that even Indian startups can build an amazing tech.
