Ghazal Alagh was born in Chandigarh on 2nd September, 1988. She belonged to a middle-class family. She did her schooling in Gurgaon, Haryana, and graduated with a Bachelor’s in Computer Applications from Punjab University. Ghazal initially served as a corporate trainer at NIIT, where she taught coding languages such as SQL and Oracle. Despite having stability, yet felt like doing something more creative and meaningful.
The Spark of Entrepreneurship
Ghazal always possessed within herself the fire to achieve something big on her own. Her entrepreneurial career started with Dietexpert.com, her first company which was a diet and health website. It did not become a success, but it gave her the idea of the startup environment. Her second venture was as an artist for Being Artsy, where she experienced her creative side. These undertakings formed the foundation of her subsequent ventures.
The Birth of Mamaearth
In 2014, Ghazal gave birth to her son, Agastya, who had eczema, a skin disease. There were no good products upon which she could depend. Disappointed with the absence of safe, toxin-free products on the market, Ghazal and her husband, Varun Alagh, decided to establish their own products. In 2016, they co-founded Mamaearth under Honasa Consumer Pvt. Ltd. with an initial capital of ₹25 lakhs. The brand focused on offering natural and non-toxic products, especially for mothers and babies.

Mamaearth’s Growth and Expansion
Mamaearth’s focus was on quality and safety which aligned with the needs of the consumers, and thus, the company grew at a fast pace. The brand diversified its products from just six to more than 140 products across all categories such as skincare, haircare, and personal care. Honasa Consumer also has brands such as The Derma Co, Aqualogica, Ayuga, BBLUNT, and Dr. Sheth’s. It soon became a part of the evrybody home.

Ghazal’s leadership is defined by a people-focused style. She is more considerate about honesty, teamwork, and acknowledgement among her team. She practices reducing priorities to ensure there is simplicity and focus, recognizing the efforts to increase morale.

Barring the stress of working in a fast-expanding business and taking care of domestic work, Ghazal takes care of her mind. She is mindful and keeps her working style in a manner that she doesn’t let work dominate her life, but improves her life instead. She has mastered the art of doing both of them. One mustn’t compromise one’s peace of mind due to work.
Personal Growth and Reflection
One of the turning points in Ghazal’s life came when her son asked her, “Mama, why are you always in a rush?” The simple question made her realize her incessant quest for success and brought about a reshuffling of priorities. She adopted five fundamental life lessons: preferring progress to perfection, knowing one’s underlying motivations, realizing the value of health, making work contribute to life, and recognizing that accepting an unchanging reality is a deliberate decision.
